'Six Stills'



The Script-Breakeven (directed by Oliver de Lansheere)
This particular shot was taken at the time the lead singer, Danny, was beginning to sing the chorus of the song.  I chose this shot as one of my examples because I think it is a good shot of a performance with instruments and a full band on stage. It is also a black and white music video which I like about it aswell. It is a low angle mid-shot of Danny and also song of the band members aswell. The lighting in this shot is very shadowed and dull with a very suttle spotlight on the band. They are shown to be performing infront of an audience in a quite relaxed atmosphere but they are putting in alot of effort into their performance, show in their body language (singing up into the microphone). What I can learn from this video is that a charasmatic performer can make a huge different when filming a perfomance shot. Also, eye contact with the audience is not always necessary/essential but the representation of the character is (in this case, vunerable and upset).
 
Two Door Cinema Club- Undercover Martyn (directed by James Lee)
This next screen shot is from a music video by Two Door Cinema club. I chose this as one of my shots because I think it is a great example of a very low budget music video which could be reflected into my own work. But also I like the way they use the lettering at the top of the screen and it contrasts with the pitch black background. This screen grab is showing the band 'floating' performing the song and at this point in time the lyrics are saying 'to the basement'. Throughout the video they show one word of the lyrics on the screen. This shot is the most dominant shot of the whole video and it is a long-shot. From this shot from the music video I have learnt that within this genre of music, simplicity is a good thing to use. Also, if what is used is abit 'rough around the edges' it still compliments the genre of music well enough to get away with.

Nicki Minaj- Super Bass (directed by Sanaa Hamri) This shot was taken at the very beginning of the Super Bass video. I chose this shot because this is one of my favourite music videos and I enjoy all of the bright colours that are used and also the purer coloured backgrounds. I think this video does a very good job of representing a star in a certain way. It shows the star, Nicki Minaj, standing infront of an icicle motorbike wearing extremely vibrant clothing with a bright wig. Although this is still a performance shot, unlike the other videos, the star is not singing into a microphone or using equiptment; she is simply lypsyncing the words. This shot is much brighter than any of the others, maybe because it is a different genre of music. The song is very upbeat and happy which is obviously reflected through the flourescent colours and lots of artifical lighting.

 Kayne West- Stronger (directed by Hype Williams)
This is a shot from one of Kayne West's older videos. I chose this shot because I think it is different from the other because it shows the artist actually doing some form of acting rather then performing. The song is called stonger and I chose to use this specific screen shot because I think that the mise en scene goes with the song lyrics well at this point. It says 'that don't kill me can only make me stronger' and it looks as if he is undergoing some type of 'surgery' to be made stronger. This shot is from the beginning of the song and when the song progresses you do see that he is a stronger person (almost as if he is unhuman now). This shot is mainly dark but there is a specific lighting be shown onto Kayne West which describes his personality perfectly (he always wants the spotlight to be on him). From this shot/music video I have learnt that lighting and mise en scene can be very useful in many different ways.



 Drake ft. Rihanna- Take Care (directed by Yoann Lemoine)
I chose this shot from the music video for the song Take Care performed by Drake and Rihanna because I think that it simply shows the true meaning of the song which is a man telling a woman that he doesn't care about her past, her will take care of her. This is shown in this shot because it has a very plain background with absolutely no mise en scene apart from the 'upset' looking characters holding eachother closing their eyes. From this I have learnt that facial expression alone can change the whole dynamic of the music video and they are very powerful and should be thought about alot when planning a music video. Also the colouring of the shots can also be effective. For example, the Nicki Minaj shot from above is colourful and helps to cuild the representation of the happy song she is singing whereas in this shot, the lights are alot more toned down with alot of shadow which also compliments the song how it should.

Azealia Banks-Liquorice (by Rankin)
This is a screen shot from the second music video released by Azealia Banks. I chose this shot because I like how it shows the independence of women nowadays and it's a good change from the girls dancing in the clubs for the male rappers which is shown alot throughout music videos. It shows her standing on some form of platform wearing every little, patriachal clothing and holding a baseball bat. The pose that she is doing is emphasising the 'power' that she feels she has as a female rapper but also as an african american female. Her surrounding is not a poular one for rap videos which makes it all the more interesting and it has a quite strong wild west theme. The song doesn't have much relevance to this shot, at this point in time because the song hasn't begun yet but it does create an immediate presumption of what the video is going to be like. This shows Azealia Banks as a strong independent woman who is wearing provocative clothing not to be a male rapper 'accesory' but to instead look how she wants to look without having to stand dancing in the band ground. From this specific shot I have learnt that if I am going to use one dominant character I have to make it apparent and obvious to the audience who is the person they need to be focusing on.
