Below are some examples of how the lighting in a music video created different effects:
Foo fighters (All My Life):
This music video begins with very little lighting and low angles shots of the band. However, throughout the whole video, the lighting (specifically the spotlighting) is flashing to the beat and the movements of the band. Even though it is evident that there is no audience in the music video, the lighting makes us feel as if we are at an actual rock show. This is a very common technique used within the rock genre and they also use spot lighting to identify which instrument is being played at each time. By using lighting in this way, it makes the most simple music video interesting and this is what the foo fighters have gone for.
Jay-Z & Kayne West (Paris):
This music video is a rap video which even though it is the opposite genre to the Foo Fighters video, they use alot of the same techniques. This music video also uses alot of flashy shot lived lighting which makes us feel like we are watching the show that they are performing the the time. Alot of the lighting is used to compliment the beats and pace in the song and when the song become more aggressive and heavy, the lighting does so aswell.
Lana Del Rey (Video Games):
This music video using lighting in a very different way to the other examples I have used in this blog post. It would seem that there is not much lighting used at all in the video but this is still effective. By not using lighting it gives the video an old and distilled effect which compliments the genre and the song well.
THE USE OF LIGHTING IN INDIE VIDEOS:
It seems that the indie genre use lighting in a way that is quite different to other genres. The t end to use the lighting to go with the song, beat and pace. The also seem to use the lighting to make a very simple location and overall video much more interesting. The Maccabess (No Kind Words):
Even though this appears to be special effects it is still added lighting. This whole video is based on a conversation between two people which could have quite a close relationship. But as trhe song begins the develop the lighting effects start to reflect how the conversation is evolving.
