Learning to Lip Synch in Final Cut

When creating a music video, especially a performance video, it is essential for there to be great lip-synching. To learn how to lip synch clips to sound I used the files of past student music videos and began to practice how to match up the performances to the original tracks. It does appear to be a tricky process at first but it an easy thing to get the hang of. It is important to have the audio that was used in the performance audible in the playback so you have more to go on than just the mouth of the words to synch up the audio and visuals.

Firstly, we placed the right audio track on the time line at about 10 seconds in and lock it so it can be moved or altered.

Next, we found the beginning of
singing on the footage in the browser window and placed the mark (m) and the did the same with the audio on the timeline.

The footage was then brought down to the timeline ensuring that both these marks were matched up. If there was a discrepancy then the footage could be moved left or right slightly using the < and > keys. The rest of the footage was lip-synched in a the same way and place on higher video lines allowing us to cut between the footage creating a fast paced edit between already synched footage.
