Digipak Magazine Adverts

Magazine adverts are a very useful marketing strategy to use to promote a new product (in this case a new cd). I have chosen 3 magazine adverts to analyse; all from different genres of music. The analyses show the difference in the advertising involved when promoting different genres of music. By analysing different magazine ads this will enable me to create a successful digipak and advert:

This first magazine as is promoting the artist Mika's album. He is a pop artist who has released many upbeat, happy songs. This is his first studio album to be released and they have used a mixture of bright colours and bold writing. By using vibrant and eyecatching features this ad stands out alot. I think this is a good technique for an artist like Mika to use because he is not a very well appreciated and well known artist and obviously he wants this to change so by using colourful adverts it may grab the attention of some new potential fans. This artwork also does a good job of reflecting Mika's personality and what type of music he is apart of. This is done by the bright colours, abstract shapes and cartoon additions aswell; all of these things suggest happy, fun things which is what his music is like. Although the whole image appears to be blended and abit confusing it is obvious what the name of the artist and album is. They have used bold purple shadowed white writing for the text on this image which makes is stand out massively next to all the colours. The text is most definetely the dominant feature of this magazine advert because it also takes up almost two thirds of the whole page. Looking into smaller details, the name of the album is called 'The boy who knew too much' and it becomes apparent that the images of the background is of a little boy in his room holding his head. So these confusing images around could be his thoughts and all of the things 'he knows'.

This magazine cover is probably one of the most powerful/influencial images known throughout hip hop. On the left hand side, it consists of a very masculine picture of Jay-Z from head to toe. He is wearing all black and is even wearing black sunglasses which is evidently used to stand out from the pure white background. Even though the background appears to be plain it then becomes obvious that they are in fact 'sculptures' of the new york building which is well known in the genre of hip hop that Jay-Z is from New York. But Jay-Z appears to be much bigger than any other the building which is clearly suggest that he is the 'King of New York' which alot of his fans would agree he is. The text on the magazine cover compliments the white background also by being a bold black and a striking red. This colour scheme also matches the solour scheme for the album The Blueprint 3 which was done on purpose to promote Jay-Z and his album even more. Jay-Z is already an extremely famous rapper and mogul all around the world so therefore he doesn't need a colourful, flashy, eyecatching cover and digipak because he knows that people will buy his music. To the right of this image is the front cover of his album and the magazine cover aswell. It consists of the same colour scheme but alot of other different features aswell. The background is alot of mixed up instruments which is complimented by the three red stripes across the middle of the foreground. These stripes are representing the '3'.

Lastly, this is the magazine advert advertising the artist Rihanna's album 'RATED R' released in 2009. This was Rihanna's fourth studio album and was released a short period of time after her incident involving Chris Brown. This album cover'magazine adverts gives a very different representation of the star compared to her other albums. This cover consists of a picture of Rihanna, alot of shadowing, shape shapes and text and little colour. This colouring of this is much alike the Jay-Z cover but with alot more grunge. This seems to be a popular choice of colour sheme throughout the 'hip-hop' industry and was also used on albums such as Lil Wayne's albums. The picture of the star is much unlike any other picture of her before and it shows her wearing dark heaving make up suggesting she is trying to hide behind something but also he hand action (covering he face) also shows this aswell. The jewellery that she wearing is also emphasising that she is not someone to mess with and this goes well with the text that says 'including the song HARD' (showing that she is 'hard'). She is covered alot by many dark shadows which definetely dominant this picture which helps to give the cover a dark, grungey edge. The text on this advert/cover is white and red. These colours help the text to stand out from the rest of the image however they are not overly dominant. This cover doesn't have a back ground and foreground it is just simply a picture of the star showing upset emotion. Even though Rihannas face is being half hidden, the pose and the way she is looking at the camera does seem to show her being upset but actually it's supposed to reflect the new found confidence that she has with the new look and new type of music she is creating.
